14 DAY TRIAL // Founded in 2005 by Anders Berglund, Anders Holtsberg, and Martin Lindberg, AlgoTrim is a company based in Sweden which, as of now, is owned by Apple.
According to the company’s web site (which is strangely still live, complete with their Android accolades), AlgoTrim “develops advanced solutions for mobile devices within the fields of data compression, mobile imaging and video, and computer graphics.”
All Things D reveals that AlgoTrim’s data-compression technology both shortens processing times and reduces file size, making it ideal for mobiles.
Since Apple has only just bought the company, it’s likely that their technology will be implemented at a later date, perhaps with the release of OS XI (the eleventh version of the desktop OS), and iOS 8.
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” spokeswoman Kirstin Huguet said when asked about the acquisition, thus confirming it.
According to the AlgoTrim site, the company started out by enhancing feature phones with super-fast codecs.
The company explains that “These [phones] ran on a single core and rather slow processor speeds.”
“One these machines fast codecs for data compression or handling MP camera images were a necessity. Founded on that expertise, AlgoTrim's engineers have successfully scaled their solutions to fully explore the computational power of complex multicore processors used in today's smartphones,” says the company.
One thing that leaves us scratching our heads is AlgoTrim’s love for Android which, following the Apple acquisition, can still be observed on algotrim.com.
“Do we work with Android? Yes, of course, and we just love to work with Android,” reads a note on the site’s home page.
Don’t expect that Android praise to live on algotrim.com much longer. As soon as Apple is done with the paperwork, their site is probably going down as well.
