Sources close to Apple say iOS 8 will include a small set of new features, including a new Maps application, the much discussed Healthbook app, and a split-screen multi-tasking function, according to the most recent reports.

In a report detailing the multi-tasking tidbit, 9to5mac also shares some details about the other changes we can expect, such as under-the-hood improvements leading to faster loading times, more responsiveness, and snappier apps.

Citing its sources, which have proved to be reliable in the past, the site notes that “Apple is focusing on speed and performance enhancements as well as user-interface refinements in iOS 8.” One source is actually quoted as saying, “think of iOS 8 as being what OS X Mavericks was to OS X last year: [an update with several refinements, a few new apps, and new ways of handling tasks.”

Speaking of handling tasks, iOS 8 might end up copying Windows’ ability to run two apps side by side, according to the same sources. We’ve discussed the news at length in a detailed report, so go ahead and read that one as well to get your full scoop of iOS 8 goodness for the day.
