Update addresses problem with ringtones, possibly security

Apple has released iOS 8.1.2 for owners of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with a surprise set of release notes that talks about lost ringtones bought through the iTunes Store, as well as a security side that has yet to be disclosed.

iOS 8.1.2 was released minutes ago over-the-air (OTA) and will soon make its way onto iDevices worldwide via traditional iTunes tethered connections. As usual, Apple mentions specific fixes, but its content distribution network is acting up.

“Includes bug fixes”

The release notes accompanying iOS 8.1.2, an update that many hoped would include fixes for things like Wi-Fi problems and other widespread issues, only mention patches for unnamed bugs and a specific fix for issues involving ringtones bought on iTunes.

According to the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, iOS 8.1.2 “includes bug fixes and addresses a problem where ringtones purchases though the iTunes Store may have been removed from your device.” Apple directs customers to http://itunes.com/restore-tones to do that. Unfortunately, the site isn’t working at the time of this writing.

The Mac maker further notes that customers interested in reviewing the security side of the update should head over to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 and see what security holes are closed in this release. Unfortunately, there is no advisory present at the time of this post.

It isn’t clear what the aforementioned “bug fixes” include, but we’re sure every user has their fingers crossed for a particular issue to be addressed.

Ongoing CDN issues

Apple has been having serious CDN (content distribution network) problems for years, and the company can’t seem to address any of them, especially in some parts of the world where the documentation associated with any update arrives hours late, sometimes even the next day.

iOS 8.1.2 is no exception to the rule. The only information available regarding this release is stenciled in the Software Update panel on our iOS devices. As far as the supplied links are concerned, Apple has yet to supply all the relevant information regarding the specific fixes in this update, including the patched vulnerabilities (if any).

The site prepared by the California tech company to instruct customers how to restore their lost ringtones is also unavailable at this time.

Apple is known to be struggling with server-centric issues internally. Some reports say the company’s cloud teams are at odds regarding certain political issues, affecting services like iMessage, Maps, and other iCloud products worldwide.
