Introduced in mid-2011 as part of the OS X Lion operating system, AirDrop is a wireless file-sharing protocol developed by Apple which is now being tested for inclusion in iOS 7, sources say.

People familiar with the development of iOS 7 (likely the same people who revealed a bulk of iOS 7 features last week) are telling 9to5mac that “Apple is currently testing versions of iOS 7 internally that include the AirDrop WiFi-direct file sharing tool from the Mac.”

AirDrop is currently integrated into the standard iOS share menu, these people say, adding that the feature will work between iOS devices and maybe even between iOS and OS X.

Since the mobile version of AirDrop is currently in beta testing (as is iOS 7 itself), the feature may not be available at the WWDC unveiling of the new operating system.
