Designer proposes killer new features for the iOS system-wide search

Apple usually keeps a close eye on the concepts flying around YouTube, especially those that claim to enhance the iOS experience. Notification Center was born this way, and, if history is any indication, iOS 7 could well include the latest Spotlight concept by designer Cody Sanfilippo.

Cody is proposing a Spotlight search on iOS that allows sifting through all applications without launching them, “a file system for iOS, a Siri-like experience from Spotlight, a way to get your information quickly in order to get back what you were doing.”

An avid user of Spotlight, Cody says he’s come to expect the simplest and most elegant way of doing things on Apple products. And he thinks Spotlight currently forces one too many operations on the customer.

“I don’t know about you guys, but I use Spotlight on iOS quite frequently. If I want to make a call, I’ll unlock my iPhone, swipe to the right and type their name into Spotlight,” writes Cody.

“I open their contact info in the Contacts app, tap their number, and I’m callin’ em. Pretty easy, but maybe a step too long,” the designer laments.

“I almost always want to call that person, having me open their information up in Contacts app and then having me click on their number doesn’t really make sense. Will that extra 4 seconds kill me? No, of course not, but with Apple products, we have come to expect the simplest and most elegant way of doing things,” he explains.

This is why he wants Apple to overhaul Spotlight on iOS. The clever video he worked up (embedded below) even speaks to the viewer in Apple-style language – with clear animations and short, succinct sentences over a white background.

Cody’s ultimate goal is to have Apple create “a Spotlight that allows for instantly calling any contact, one where I can get my information quickly when I’m in a hurry and get out, a system where I can search within an application without me having to launch it first.”

“Actually,” he says, “I want even more than that.”

Well Cody, we’ll do our bit to spread the word. Let’s hope Apple eyes it and gives you a call, because we too think it’s pretty awesome. Best of luck, mate!
