iOS 7 beta 2, the latest mobile OS flavor that Apple made available for download for developers yesterday with support for iPad and iPad mini, in addition to iPhone and iPod touch, has already unveiled some welcomed surprises for enthusiasts.

Destined mainly for testing, the iOS 7 beta 2 release comes to devices with some new features when compared to the initial beta flavor, but it would still not unveil all that Apple has in store for users when the platform hits the gold stage, it seems.

iOS 7 was already known to be adding some new camera features for developers, and it seems that new image detectors have been included in the beta 2 release, 9to5mac notes in a recent post.

To be more précise, while APIs included in previous versions of the operating system provided basic face recognition capabilities, iOS 7 will also be able to distinguish characteristics such as blinking and smiles, code found in beta 2 shows.

Some other mobile platforms out there already include similar capabilities, and it seems that Apple is set to bring its OS on par with them too.

With no announcement made on the matter as of now, it is possible that Apple decided to make the ability to detect facial expressions like blinking eyes and smiles official when the final flavor of iOS 7 arrives.

However, the company is already working on the capability, which explains why said code was found in the second iOS 7 beta release. It wouldn’t be unusual for Apple to hide new platform features from users until the official release either.

The addition to new camera capabilities in iOS 7 also falls in line with rumors on the possible inclusion of a better photo snapper inside iPhone 5S, paired with dual-LED flash, and a fingerprint scanner, albeit unconfirmed as of now.
