Set to debut this fall in tandem with iCloud, iOS 5 is the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system powering the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It brings with it over 200 new features building on the success of iOS versions before it, and one of those is the new Camera app which we’re here to talk about today.

Not that Apple’s iOS Camera app was in need of an overhaul, but Apple felt there was room for improvement.

Since they were overhauling the entire mobile OS anyway, why not, right?

First of all, they listened to the cries of users who desperately wanted to take photos using a physical button, rather than touch the screen.

As many iPhone users will agree, taking photos by tapping the on-screen launcher can result in moved stills.

The ability to snap a quick one using the volume-up button should enable crisper results.

Next, they added the ability to access the camera application instantly without having to unlock the device.

In iOS 5, a camera icon is right there next to the unlock slider. Tapping it gives you immediate access to the app so you can “capture the moment at a moment’s notice,” as the Mac maker puts it. Review image “Since your iPhone is always with you, it’s often the best way to capture those unexpected moments. That’s why you’ll love the new camera features in iOS 5,” Apple says.

There’s more.

As you’re lining up your shot, you can use multi-touch gestures to quickly zoom in and out of specific areas.

The app now lets you touch and hold to lock focus and exposure, and you can use grid lines to compose a shot.

Review image “Use grid lines, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and single-tap focus and exposure locks to compose a picture on the fly. Then press the volume-up button to snap your photo in the nick of time,” says Apple.

Finally, users with an iCloud account will be able to activate a feature called Photo Stream. This will allow them to have their photos automatically downloaded to all their other devices as soon as a picture is taken.
