But only for non-A5 devices, and it’s mostly tethered, says Musclenerd

A jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is already available for those who want to test the waters, Musclenerd has announced. As usual, the hacker directs his Twitter followers to the iPhone Dev Team blog where everyone can review the caveats.

Speaking on behalf of the team he represents, Musclenerd says “we realize that some of you non-A5 jailbreakers are itching to get to 5.1, even though there seems to be no compelling new feature there.”

“Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6,” he notes.

According to Musclenerd, those interested in jailbreaking should know that “this is a tethered 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices.”

“If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first!”, he warns. Musclenerd adds that “ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).”

People who are wielding an old-bootrom 3GS are in luck. Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 for OS X and Windows will provide a full, untethered jailbreak. And “redsn0w will figure that part out automatically,” says the hacker, therefore the user doesn't have to take any precautions.

Finally, the jailbreak will cause iBooks to stop working until a new version of redsn0w is released.

The warnings come as an update to an earlier post by the Dev Team which specifically outlined that iOS 5.1 should be avoided by most jailbreakers.

People using a device older than the iPad 2 can safely downgrade to whatever version they want, but only as long as they have their SHSH blobs saved for that particular version of the iOS.

“You’ll need the assistance of geohot’s limera1n exploit with tools like redsn0w to get into “pwned DFU mode” and bypass the downgrade restriction,” the Dev Team notes. See the full post here.
