Doesn’t work with the dual-core iPad 2 or iPhone 4S devices

Apple’s latest iOS release has been confirmed as jailbreak-able by people testing the bits against Redsn0w 0.9.9b5, the newest jailbreak tool from the iPhone Dev Team.

A group who makes a habit out of jailbreaking the heck out of Apple’s devices and posting tutorials on the web, Redmond Pie can confirm that he latest version of Redsn0w can “tether-jailbreak” the new iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Not all models are supported, though. For example, Apple’s dual-core A5-equipped iPads and iPhones won’t surrender to Redsn0w, but models like the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 3GS, as well as all iPod touches, will. The first-gen iPad is also jailbreak-able.

Word has it that people waiting for the untethered jailbreak to arrive should steer clear of stock iOS 5.0.1 IPSWs from Apple.

But recent developments at Chronic Dev indicate there will be an untethered jailbreak coming soon.

In addition to their previous efforts, a new bug exposed by hacker extraordinaire Charlie Miller may pave the way for such a hack to emerge soon.

Unfortunately, Miller paid a hefty price for exposing the bug - lost his Apple developer license - not to mention he had Apple’s own security in mind when he did it, not jailbreaks. Talk about shooting the messenger.

As for the iOS 5.0.1 update itself, Apple released it with the main purpose of fixing battery drain issues, as well as other bugs.

In theory, the patch should have delivered a fix allowing the world to move on past Batterygate. In reality, it amplified it.

Mixed results are not being reported from all corners of the world with some customers claiming that iOS 5.0.1 made their experience even worse than before.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will soon release another patch, keeping the cat-and-mouse game alive between it and the jailbreak community.
