In addition to updating the ultrasn0w unlock tool to support iOS 4 for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, the group of hackers known as the iPhone Dev Team has released redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3, an update to its jailbreak tool for iPhone and iPod touch. The new release can effectively jailbreak iPhone 3G handsets and the second-generation iPod touch, in addition to hacktivating iOS 4 for iPhone 3G, according to the Dev Team.

“Around an hour ago the new version of the iPhone Operating System (now called ‘iOS’) was released,” the Dev Team writes on its blog. “iOS 4 is a huge release for Apple with many many changes and those changes offer slick additional features. These new features are being offered by Apple as a free upgrade to qualifying devices,” the team acknowledges.

Moving on to the jailbreak topic, the crew writes, “We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock. Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.”

Prior to the redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3 update, the hackers said that those who relied on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) should not upgrade until they’d fully tested and released their tools. “Don’t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information,” another warning goes. According to their post, those who’ve updated to iOS 4 upgrading their baseband should be in the clear for future updates.

The Team soon followed with an update saying, “redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G).” The post now includes download links to the Mac and Windows versions of the tool. According to the Dev Team, this redsn0w beta release currently supports only the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G with today’s iOS 4. Jailbreakers will need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w, since this is still a beta release, the Team concludes.
