Cupertino-based Apple announced a while ago that it plans on releasing a new software update for its already popular iPhone 4, and that new firmware solution, namely iOS 4.0.1, is already available for download. According to Apple's support website, the new software release is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. As one might have expected, the new firmware is meant to address an issue with the handset's antenna, or with the signal reception, to be more precise.

According to Apple's support web page, the new iOS 4.0.1 software update for iPhone comes with various fixes and improvements, including the following: “Improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display.” At the same time, Apple notes that “This update contains security content originally included in previous iOS Updates.”

There has been a lot of fuzz regarding the reception issues the new iPhone 4 comes to the market with. Many of the reports on this issue suggested that the problem is experienced when the device is tightly griped in the hand. While others argued that the problem does not even exist, Apple admitted that the iPhone 4 does show less signal bars when in hand, and decided to release the iOS 4.0.1 update in an attempt to solve the problem.

iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS come with full support for iOS 4.0.1, while iPhone 3G, although supports the solution, does not support all the features included in it, such as multitasking and wallpapers, though it seems that even these can be enabled.

Yesterday, Apple announced that it is holding an emergency press conference about the iPhone 4 today (Friday, July 16) at 10am PDT in Cupertino. While the company was not specific on what it would be discussed, speculation rose on the matter, suggesting that Apple would attempt to defuse the entire situation on iPhone 4's antenna issues. Softpedia would provide coverage of the event, so check with us again starting with 10am PDT.
