Apple wants to create a “Variable device graphical user interface” that adapts to the user as he or she moves around with the device in hand. The technology will probably be available years from now.

The patent abstract states, “Methods, systems, devices, and apparatus, including computer program products, for adjusting a graphical user interface. A motion of a device is detected. A graphical user interface of the device is adjusted in response to the detected motion.”

The application details a UI that detects changes in the motion of the device, such as an iPhone or an iPad. The OS would “determine a pattern of motion of the device based on the changes in motion matching predefined criteria.”

The application rows would stretch or contract, while some elements would zoom in or out via fish-eye effects, as a result of this GUI implementation.

A technology that is likely to arrive in iOS 10 the earliest, such an adaptive UI would pose a great advantage when using a smartphone on the move.
