Portability is among the most important factors in technology nowadays and this is the reason why an increasingly higher number of manufacturers come up with all sorts of devices aimed especially at those users for whom mobility is a very important issue. And one such device is the FT-86-911-TP rugged keyboard, which has just been announced by the iKey company, a vehicle-friendly keyboard that offers
excellent tactile feel in a compact design.

Designed with universal mounting holes, iKey's new full travel keyboard is specifically constructed for vehicle mount in police, emergency, transport, service and marine vehicles. Its distinctive shape was created based on popular demand for a keyboard that can swing around easily in vehicles. Featuring a user-friendly integrated touchpad, LED backlit keys for low-light environments, one-touch emergency key and mounting holes, iKey's new Full Travel keyboard is sealed to IP55 specifications. It is therefore resistant to spills that may occur in vehicles, yet still features plastic keys that feel just like a regular desktop keyboard.

The device sports 12 function keys and provides 86-key functionality and it's manufactured out of ABS polycarbonate, which makes it both very tough and quite lightweight. The keyboard occupies very little space in the emergency vehicle, since it measures around 28.5 centimeters x 15.87 centimeters x 1.52 centimeters.

"This product fills the gap for those users that desire the feel of a standard keyboard in their demanding environments," says Joel East, Technical Designer for iKey Industrial Peripherals. "iKey is a pioneer of the mobile keyboard industry, and despite many competitor attempts at replication, iKey's superior products are the premium solution."

Unfortunately, there's no pricing information available for now, considering the fact that this device is not really aimed at the home-users, but we'll try to find out how much these things cost and we'll keep you posted.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .

This keyboard is the worst thing i have ever used on the job!! Touch pad does not work with gloves on and there is not a nifty index finger trac mouse. The keyboard lacks keys and commonly used keys are in odd spots. No double tap mouse pad and the left and right mouse click keys are on opposite sides of the mouse pad making it hard to click and drive while trying to access critial information during rapid response. The vehicle this car was installed in never gets used because everyone hates it. I am sure it will end up smashed on the side of the road one day when someone is sick of typing a 10 page burglary report!!
