Get rid of the “Get Windows 10” app from your PC

If you're on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you’ve probably already got the “Get Windows 10” notification on your desktop, as Microsoft's offering its new operating system free of charge to any user running a genuine copy of one of these two versions.

But in case you do not want to upgrade to Windows 10, that notification has certainly become super annoying, and there's no option to make it go away unless you turn to third-party apps or complicated tricks that involve removing some Windows updates and additional tweaking.

That's why the app we're going to present to you today, which is intuitively called “I Don't Want Windows 10,” is so helpful for those who just want to stick to Windows 7 or 8.1 for the time being.

How it works

Basically, “I Don't Want Windows 10” takes care of the KB3035583 update, which in its turn is responsible for bringing the Windows 10 upgrade notification on your computer.

Moreover, if you choose the advanced mode, the app makes you the owner of the GWX folder in System32, where all the files are stored in order to display the notification, and after that, it removes absolutely all items stored in this location. Afterward, it sets the GWX folder to read-only to make sure that no other changes are being made.

Keep in mind, however, that once Microsoft reoffers the same KB3035583 update, you have to launch the app once again because all the changes that you make are automatically reset.

Obviously, this app can really come in handy to many users who simply don't want to upgrade, and it's hard to understand why Microsoft isn't offering options to stop the notification from showing up once again in the first place. But in the meantime, anyone can download I Don't Want Windows 10 and get rid of the notification once and for all (or until Microsoft re-issues that patch).
