Caitlyn Jenner’s journey should have had more of a bang

Caitlyn Jenner started her “official” journey to womanhood and LGBT campaigning with the premiere of her docuseries, I Am Cait, on Sunday night on E!. The first episode of the limited series came with incredibly high expectations pinned on it - expectations it failed to meet.

The Hollywood Reporter informs that initial Nielsen ratings put the docuseries at an average audience of 2.73 million viewers.

That isn’t bad, especially if compared to the average rating for an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, of which Jenner was a part of until not long ago. However, that’s not what we should compare it to, if we want to get a feel of how it was supposed to perform on the opening night.

Jenner’s April interview with Diane Sawyer, in which she came out as a trans-woman and revealed she had not yet started the transition process, brought 17 million viewers.

The follow-up special on KUWTK, Keeping Up with the Kardashians: About Bruce, which dealt with the aftermath of this revelation and the family’s way of dealing with the news of the transition, got 4.2 million people to tune in and marked a high for the series in the past 3 years.

Jenner’s more recent ESPYS 2015 appearance, which aired on ABC and marked her first public appearance since completing transition, got 8 million viewers.

To these numbers, 2.73 million for the series premiere feels like small change. So, where you among these 2.73 million people tuning in? If so, what did you think of the docuseries: did you find it as revolutionary as it claims to be, or do you think it’s just another Kardashian “product”?
