Huawei’s head of P series, Lao Shi, took to one of China’s biggest social networks Weibo to state his opinion on RAM capacity in today’s smartphones. The official believes that 4GB of RAM in a phone is enough.

Huawei’s official explains that 4GB of RAM in a smartphone is more than enough for it to run smoothly, while adding that in-house tests have proven that Huawei’s devices powered by Kirin 960 and 4GB of RAM/128GB of storage performed better over longer periods of time compared to similar smartphones with 6GB of RAM.

Shi adds that overall user experience doesn’t depend on the amount of RAM, but it’s more directly related to the quality of software, most importantly of software optimizations. He went on to mention iOS as a good example of contemporary mobile operating system that doesn’t need lots of RAM to function without issues.

Huawei does offer phones with 6GB of RAM

Lao Shi has compared the smartphone RAM race with the nuclear arms race which occurred during the Cold War, showing that he believes the entire matter is pointless. He adds that smartphones with 6GB or 8GB of RAM lead to significantly higher manufacturing costs, which are then transferred to the end user. Huawei’s official believes that 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is a better combination than 6GB of RAM and 64GB of memory for daily use scenarios.

Finally, he notes that phones with 6GB of RAM aren’t inherently bad, but they’re not necessary at the moment. Huawei does offer a number of smartphones with RAM capacity higher than 4GB, as the company wishes to stay competitive and relevant in the smartphone market.

The recently announced P10 Plus has a more expensive variant with 6GB of RAM launching in China soon. In addition, the Mate 9 Porsche Design offers the same amount of RAM, as do the Honor 8 Pro and the Mate 9 Pro.
