After leaked renders and various details about the HTC U surfaced online recently, HTC has finally announced when the new flagship will make its debut. May 16 will be the day when HTC will unveil the U flagship, during an event in Taiwan.

To tease the event, HTC posted a short video highlighting the Edge Sense feature on the upcoming smartphone. The main selling point for the new HTC flagship will surely be the Edge Sense that will allow you to gently squeeze the sides of the frame and perform various actions, like snap pictures or launch an app.

Obviously, this will make it easier for you to access various areas of the smartphone, but it remains to be seen if the feature adds to the phone’s functionality or if it’s just another gimmick.

Powerful specs and water resistance

Many details about the upcoming HTC U are already known, including the fact that it will feature a 5.5-inch QHD display and run the latest Snapdragon 835 platform, found in many flagships launched this year.

Moreover, RAM capacity is said to reach 4GB, with 64GB of internal storage, while customers in China will get a beefed-up version with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, as the market there is much more competitive with many Chinese phone makers offering powerful specs for very affordable prices.

In terms of main camera capacity, HTC U is said to come with a 12MP camera, a 16MP selfie snapper and draw power from a 3,000mAh battery. HTC U is also expected to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack and feature IP57 certification with protection against water splashes and dust.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging and Bluetooth 4.2 will be featured on the new smartphone, while Android 7.1 Nougat and HTC’s Sense UI will run out of the box. HTC’s upcoming phone is expected to take on Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and other premium smartphones on the market, with its Edge Sense being the main attraction.
