Following the HTC 10 Evo announcement, the Taiwanese company silently introduced a new smartphone, but one that's positioned in the low-tier range, the Desire 650.

The new handset has been listed on the company official website and is expected to make its debut on the market in December. However, for the time being, HTC confirmed the Desire 650 would be available in Taiwan only.

HTC Desire 650 could be rolled out in other countries as well, so it's worth mentioning the smartphone costs just $170 outright.

Obviously, you shouldn't expect any high-end specs inside the Desire 650, but for the price you pay, it could be a solid alternative to other smartphones in the same range.

For example, the phone is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. HTC also added microSD card slot for memory expansion.

The Desire 650 sports a decent 5-inch display that supports HD (720p) resolution. There's also a 13-megapixel camera on the back, which is probably one of the strongest points of the phone. In the front, the handset packs a secondary 5-megapixel camera for selfies.

HTC's smartphone comes with BoomSound, LTE support and a 2,200 mAh battery. It will ship with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system and is likely to stay on this version for the rest of its life.

The Desire 650 is the sequel to another low mid-end Android smartphone that HTC launched earlier this year, the Desire 630. Unfortunately, when we put their spec sheets side-by-side, we realized there are no actual differences between the two phones.

The overall design has been changed a bit, as the Desire 650 features a “rugged”-like pattern on the bottom half of the back side, but that's about the only major difference between these low mid-end smartphones.
