HTC is prepping a mystery “hero” smartphone

HTC has had a lousy year so far. Their flagship device for the year, the One M9, failed to spark the interest of consumers around the globe, as the phone failed to differentiate itself from the competition and previous HTC high-end products.

At some point down the road, HTC had to apologize to investors for the disappointing sales, but promised it would bounce back later this year with a “hero” project meant to wash away the failure that was the One M9.

The “hero” product that the Taiwanese company is prepping seems to be the HTC Aero, which has leaked a bunch of times before and will apparently be a premium device.

Well, a few days ago, Mobi Picker picked up the information that the next-gen flagship device coming out of HTC would apparently be called the HTC A9 (and not O2 as it was previously whispered around). So in absence of other info, we have to assume that the Aero will be launched as the HTC A9 when the time comes.

Snapdragon 820 or MediaTek Helio X20?

Although the report doesn’t specify anything about the specifications of the upcoming flagship, it is implied that the phone will come out equipped with a new MediaTek Helio X20 chipset (the deca-core kind) under the hood.

This comes against previous information which indicated that the A9 would take advantage of Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 820 (with custom Kyro cores) instead. Older hearsay would also have us believe that the phone will feature a 6-inch display with QHD resolution (1440 x 2560 pixels) and boast a so-called groundbreaking camera.

The source also mentions that the phone will come with 2.5D curved glass and full metal body. Finally, the A9 will be offered in Tyrant Gold and Dark Gray and will apparently be sold with a price tag ranging between $470 / €409 and $626 / €544.

As you can see, things are getting pretty mixed up, so hopefully we will soon be able to clear the confusion between the HTC A9 and HTC O2. Could it be that the Taiwanese device maker is looking to unveil two models? One with a Snapdragon 820 and one with a Helio X20 inside?
