14 DAY TRIAL // The development team behind the HPLIP (short for HP Linux Imaging and Printing) project, an open-source initiative to bring the latest HP printer drivers to GNU/Linux distributions, has released the third maintenance build in the 3.16 series.
HP Linux Imaging and Printing 3.16.3 has just been announced today, March 18, 2016, and it includes initial support for Canonical's upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, thus providing drivers for the latest HP printers and scanners to Ubuntu Linux users installing the new OS.
Another interesting change in HPLIP 3.16.3 is the fact that the RPM packaging for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x series of operating systems has been discontinued, but recent releases of RHEL are still supported. Detailed installation instructions are provided by the project's maintainers on the official website.
Also, a traceback error that occurred when pressing the ESC button during the prompt for inputting the root (system administrator) credentials while installing the driver has been fixed. More details should be available in the official release announcement and the changelog inside the source archive.
Nine new HP printers are now supported
Besides the addition of support for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, HP Linux Imaging and Printing 3.16.3 adds support for new HP PageWide and DeskJet printer series, among which we can mention HP PageWide Pro 577dw and 577z multifunction printers, as well as HP PageWide Pro 552dw, 452dw, and 452dn printers.
Moreover, the HP PageWide Pro 477dw and 477dn multifunction printers, and HP DeskJet GT 5810 and 5820 all-in-one printers are also supported.
