HP (Hewlett-Packard) has announced the release of a new open source, full-featured network operating system (NOS) called OpenSwitch.

HP's OpenSwitch network operating system is based on the latest Linux technologies, powered by Linux kernel, and designed from the offset to act as a community-based platform for users and developers alike, dedicated to accelerating the innovation and bypass vendor lock-in. Being a full-featured NOS, OpenSwitch aims to be the perfect solution for building data center networks that have been tweaked for business apps, without too much hassle and without the need to have deep networking or Linux knowledge.

"Open source software, with its collaborative community of specialized developers, accelerates innovation and improves the stability of the software platform, providing organizations with a more powerful infrastructure to support their specific business requirements," says Mark Carroll, Chief Technology Officer for HP Networking. "The newly formed developer community and Linux-based OpenSwitch NOS early release code will help developers address the rapidly evolving business and web-scale networking needs in the industry."

Announcing the OpenSwitch community

Along with the announcement for the new OpenSwitch Linux kernel-based network operating system, Hewlett-Packard has had the great pleasure of announcing the OpenSwitch community, a place where anyone can become a part of the networking and data center revolution, and help drive the future of networking. You can find all the details you need to get started with OpenSwitch on the community's website.

OpenSwitch is available today, providing users with a fully featured L2/L3 control plane stack, as well as a programmatic, traditional, and declarative control plane. Best of all, OpenSwitch is supported by some of the biggest names in the networking industry, including Intel, Broadcom, Arista, Qosmos, Accton, VMWare, and HP itself, the global information technology company and hardware manufacturer known for producing laptops, desktops, servers, printers, storage solutions, enterprise services, as well as cloud solutions.
