Windows 10 was launched with much fanfare on July 29 as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users, with Microsoft hoping to convince eligible users to install it and reach a record 1 billion devices running the new OS by 2017.

Statistics provided by market research firm StatCounter show that Windows 10 is indeed growing at a steady pace, but at the same time, it's also impacting Windows 7's market share, which is something to be expected, given the fact that it's offered for free to these users.

Right now, Windows 10 has a market share of 9.32 percent, according to these figures, which is the best score the new OS has reached since its debut in late July.

Windows 7's performance, on the other hand, is full of ups and downs, but a closer look at this chart shows that, despite the oscillations recorded in the last nearly 60 days, the world's number one operating system still declined after the arrival of Windows 10.

Windows 10 enjoying a steady growth

Four days after its launch, Windows 10 was also running on 2.74 percent of the desktop computers across the world, which is clearly a pretty good number for a new operating system. But the growth continued and the first peak was reached on August 9, when Windows 10 was spotted on 5.34 percent of PCs.

A slight decline was recorded in the next few days, but Windows 10 recovered soon after that and it kept on growing until reaching another peak on September 20. Windows 10 was powering 9.11 percent of the desktop computers on that day.

Another drop followed after that before Windows 10 eventually started climbing once again to reach 9.32 percent on Sunday.

Obviously, Microsoft expects this growth to continue in the coming weeks and months, but the company is still far from the 1 billion devices milestone that it hopes to reach by 2017.
