Windows 10 May 2019 Update, also known as version 1903, will bring a plethora of improvements to desktop computers, including refinements for the Start menu.

As you may know if you’ve been an Insider from the very beginning, the Windows 10 Start menu received new tweaks with every OS feature update, so the May update makes no exception to this rule.

In a post highlighting the Start menu changes coming to users with the release of Windows 10 version 1903, the Shell team at Microsoft explains that users can now uninstall twice more pre-installed apps as compared to the previous Windows release.

Furthermore, managing multiple tiles at the same time is a thing now, and the Start menu also gets a simplified default layout for new devices, new user accounts, and clean installs.

Separate process for the Start menu

Fluent Design has also been expanded to the left navigation bar, and the power button now comes with a little indicator when updates are pending a system reboot.

But the most important change is without a doubt the creation of a separate process for the Start menu.

“Start was part of the broader Shell experience. Moving Start into its own app, while of course still feeling integrated into the Shell, provided users with several benefits,” Microsoft explains.

“By insulating Start from potential issues impacting other surfaces, Insiders saw measurable improvements in Start reliability. With the new app in place, Start was opening significantly faster. Even better, because Start is such a big part of the overall Windows experience for most users, we saw these reliability improvements contributing to performance improvements for the entire OS.”

Windows 10 version 1903 is projected to launch in late May, and the rollout will take place gradually to devices across the world. Insiders can already try out the RTM build by enrolled in the Release Preview ring.
