Stats show a somewhat improving market for WP

Microsoft will soon launch Windows 10 Mobile, which is pretty much the biggest update Windows Phone has ever received, so it’s no surprise that Redmond has huge expectations in the mobile business.

But in the meantime, Windows Phone, which barely receives the parent company’s attention these days, continues to improve in most big markets across the world, although its market share remains relatively low. On the bright side, Windows Phone keeps growing, despite the small market share, but on the other hand, it still has a hard time competing against Android and iOS.

As far as the United States is concerned, figures show that this isn’t quite the friendliest market for Windows Phone, and Microsoft really has a hard time stealing users from its rivals. But just as it happens in the other countries, Windows Phone’s performance is steady, if not improving significantly.

Data provided by comScore for the three-month period ending July 2015 shows that Windows Phone has a share of 2.9 percent in the United States, which is only 0.1 percent below April 2015 figures. This means that Windows Phone maintains the same level in Microsoft’s home market, despite the fact that no major OS updates or flagships have been released.

Windows 10 Mobile to the rescue

A different set of data that we wrote about yesterday and provided by Kantar shows that Windows Phone has a share of 3.8 percent in the United States, an increase of 1.3 points from the previous year. Android is number one with 65.6 percent, according to Kantar, while iOS is second with 30.1 percent.

comScore says Android powers 51.4 percent of the smartphones in the country, while iOS is running on 44.2 percent.

While these figures are slightly different, it’s pretty clear that Windows Phone still has a long way to go to become a powerful rival to Android and iOS, and everyone hopes to see this changing when Windows 10 Mobile sees daylight next month.

This new platform was specifically developed from the very beginning to fix the annoyances of Windows Phone, so it comes with support for Android apps in order to tackle the lack of apps that had a huge impact on the platform’s adoption figures across the world.

Microsoft will also debut new flagships together with Windows 10 Mobile, and given the United States’ appetite for high-end phones, Redmond hopes to actually get closer to its rivals when the new OS comes out.
