It’s high time we got a sleek new tablet

Tablets have fallen from grace lately. Once, everyone’s attention was focused on these devices, but in recent times, we have failed to see any real innovation in this product niche. Device makers continue to launch slates, albeit at a slower pace, but they usually follow familiar patterns, both aesthetically and hardware-wise.

Well, relatively unknown device maker HiSense has a new tablet computer called Magic Mirror that comes to challenge the design parameters set so far. First off, the slate features a record-breaking screen-to-body ratio and comes equipped with really minimal bezels.

Secondly, the slate is very sleek around the edges, while at the center it measures 0.3 inches / 7.62 mm in thickness. A really interesting approach, to say the least. On top of its interesting looks, the tablet also boasts a very good looking and minimalist interface which is built on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop.

As per hardware, Magic Mirror is quite attractive in this department as well. The device arrives with an 8.4-inch display with 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, which results in a pixel density of 360ppi. Under the hood lies a Rockchip RK3288 chipset working in combination with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of in-built storage. More than that, the slate comes with Dolby Audio for an improved sound experience.

We’ve seen a rekindled interest in tablets in the past few days, so who knows, maybe slates do have a chance of making a return into the spotlight. At IFA 2015, device maker Alcatel OneTouch launched an atypical device called Xess, which offers a 17.3-inch form factor and looks like a turntable when placed facedown.

Moreover, Samsung also teased a big tablet called the Galaxy View towards the end of its IFA conference, which we have to assume is the 18-incher we’ve been hearing about. Well, the HiSense Magic Mirror isn’t a huge tablet, but it looks interesting and fresh, so maybe you want to give it a chance.
