14 DAY TRIAL // The closer we get to the official launch date of the iPhone 8, the more leaks, be they real or fake, make it to the web, some of them providing quite contradictory information as compared to what we knew already.
Such a leak took place today, revealing what appears to be a fingerprint sensor on the back of a phone spotted during quality control stage. Posted on SlashLeaks, the video claims to show the upcoming iPhone 8, which after such a long controversy, wouldn’t come without Touch ID or a sensor embedded in the display, but with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.
At this point, it’s pretty hard to tell whether this is a fake video or not, but if it’s a fake, whoever did this really tried to make it as elaborate as possible. The print of the left even includes the word “Mesa,” which is the codename Apple is using for Touch ID internally.
No fingerprint sensor at all?
Up to this point, the majority of leaks claimed Apple wanted to launch the iPhone 8 without a fingerprint sensor, mostly after the company failed to embed the sensor into the screen.
Apple doesn’t want to put the fingerprint sensor on the back because this is an approach that’s been used by Android device manufacturers, so instead the company seems ready to abandon Touch ID entirely and go for facial recognition that would be possible with infrared cameras integrated into a sensor bar at the top of the bezel-less display.
There’s also a chance that the device seen in this video could be the standard iPhone 7s, but given that this model is likely to come with small design changes, including the existing bezels on the current generation, it doesn’t make sense for Apple to move the fingerprint sensor to the back of the phone.
Everything about the new iPhone generation will be revealed next month when Apple is finally expected to take the wraps off the iPhone 8, the iPhone 7s, and the iPhone 7s Plus.
