The leaked specs will disappoint many an AMD fans

In our previous coverage of the AMD R9 380X, we considered the upcoming graphics adapter from AMD will be a strong contender to NVIDIA's GTX 960 and GTX 970 and will fit nicely between AMD's existing R9 380 and R9 390 GPUs. Now we know the specs and that is probably going to arrive in late October.

The new R9 380X is AMD's latest and probably most interesting intermediary offer in its pretty big catalogue of graphics adapters that is full of intermediary models and full-size GPU cards. While NVIDIA offers a pretty wide range of full-die models as well, they are more expensive than AMD ones and can't really compete with the Red Team in terms of intermediary cards. Fortunately for NVIDIA, sale numbers are on their side, so price-wise they can always afford to charge more.

According to overclock3d, the new R9 380X is a 4GB GDDR5, 256-bit graphics adapter that will use only a part of the silicon's full 384-bit memory bus like was previously thought, so this will mean that the GPU will use a very similar PCB as the existing R9 380 GPUs, something that will allow the new graphics card to be implemented at a lower manufacturing price than it was initially thought. Evidently, the Tonga's full 384-bit size would have been ideal but AMD decided otherwise.

On the long run, this decision will force the card to get along with a reduced GPU maximum memory bandwidth and ultimately with a lower amount of memory. Obviously, the card places itself as some sort of cheaper GTX 970 since both cards come with 4GB GDDR5, 256-bit bus and around the same 1100MHz clock speed. For AMD fans, this would be evidently placed between the AMD R9 380 and the AMD R9 390, the only difference between this and the R9 380 being the slightly higher clock speed and more stream processors and compute units.
