Apple released today the first public beta of its upcoming macOS Mojave 10.14 computer operating system, allowing users without a developer account to install the OS on their Macs.

Now that you know how to install the iOS 12 public beta on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, it's time to learn how to run the macOS Mojave 10.14 operating system on your Mac by installing the first public beta release, which Apple made available earlier via its Apple Beta Software Program.

Unveiled on June 4, 2018, during the WWDC 2018 keynote presentation, macOS Mojave 10.14 promises a set of cool new features for all Mac users. Among these, we can mention a new Dark Mode, dynamic desktop functionality that changes the look of your Mac throughout the day, and support for desktop stacks for icons.

The Finder, Quick Look, and Screenshot components of macOS received new abilities in macOS Mojave 10.14, and you can now make group FaceTime calls with up to 32 people at once, just like on iOS 12. macOS Mojave also comes with four new apps ported from iOS, namely News, Stocks, Home, and Voice Memos.

Last but not least, the Mac App Store in macOS Mojave 10.14 is totally revamped and looks completely different from that on macOS High Sierra 10.13. Similar to iOS 12, automatic strong passwords in Safari as available too, and macOS Mojave promises enhanced tracking prevention, as well much stronger security and privacy.

Supported Macs

Unfortunately, macOS Mojave 10.14 drops support for some older Macs that were supported by macOS High Sierra 10.13 but released before 2012. Supported MacBook and MacBook Pro models include MacBook Air Mid 2012 or newer, MacBook Early 2015 or newer, and MacBook Pro Mid 2012 or newer.

Additionally, you can also install macOS Mojave 10.14 on Mac mini Late 2012 or newer, iMac Late 2012 or newer, iMac Pro 2017, Mac Pro Late 2013, as well as Mac Pro Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable GPUs. Mac Pro 2010 and 2012 models will be supported as well, but only by the final macOS Mojave release.

Installing the macOS Mojave 10.14 public beta

To install the macOS Mojave 10.14 public beta on your Mac, first check out if your Mac is supported by reading the above section. Then, make sure you have a recent backup of your most precious files. Finally, enroll in the macOS Mojave public beta program by visiting the Apple Beta Software Program website.

Sign in with your Apple ID that you're using on your Mac right now, and enroll your Mac into the public beta program by clicking on the "enroll your Mac" link in the "Getting Started" section. Then, you are automatically redirected to a page where you have to follow some steps required for installing the macOS Mojave 10.14 public beta.

Clicking the "Download the macOS Mojave Public Beta" link will open the Mac App Store on your Mac and activate the redemption code, which is unique for your computer. After that, you'll be redirected to the macOS Mojave page in the Mac App Store, where you can download the installer by clicking on the "Download" button.

When the macOS Mojave installer was downloaded, it will open automatically, so follow the on-screen instructions to install the operating system on your Mac, which could take about an hour or so depending on how fast your computer is. Your Mac will be automatically restarted a few times during the installation.

Make sure your Mac is plugged to its charger during the entire installation. That's it, you're now running the macOS Mojave 10.14 public beta on your Mac, which, in time, will be updated to new public beta versions as they are released by Apple via the Mac App Store until the final release this fall. Have fun!
