Windows Phone's dead, so what should be my next destination?

Switching to iPhone or Android is the only option left for Windows phone users

I guess everyone agrees at this point that Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile no longer has a future, and even though Microsoft has dropped several hints of a potential makeover, the chances of seeing something big happening on this platform are declining every day.

Earlier this week, one of Microsoft’s last allies in the mobile war admitted something that we were all aware of but which we rarely heard from someone so deeply involved in the Windows Phone business.

HP explained that while the company developed several new Windows phones based on the Elite X3 monster and supposed to help keep the platform alive, all of these devices had to eventually be discontinued because of Microsoft’s complete lack of focus on mobile. Furthermore, HP is also getting ready to pull the Elite X3, hinting that even though 2019 is the target date to retire this model, it could all happen as soon as the inventory is cleared out.

In other words, even the most committed Microsoft partners are giving up on mobile, and it’s all happening as a result of the way the software giant handles this side of the business.

So if everyone is giving up on Windows phones, I guess there’s absolutely no reason why I should stick with this dying operating system any longer.

iPhone or Android?

In the last 12 to 24 months, I’ve witnessed users, developers, and companies altogether waving goodbye to Windows phones and switching to Android and iOS, and in most of the cases, the transition was performed with no regrets. Mostly because no matter which one of the two they chose, there’s a completely new world out there with millions of apps, hardware support, and frequent updates.

Choosing between Android and iPhone, however, isn’t such an easy thing to do as many could think, and even though it’s a subjective decision, every single Windows phone user must have a good reason for choosing one over the other.

After using nearly every single Windows phone that got to see daylight, switching sides is a difficult decision. However, reviewing phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, the Google Pixel XL, the iPhone 8 Plus, and even the OnePlus 5 proved me that it makes no sense to make so many compromises on Windows 10 Mobile when you can have almost everything on a different platform.

And that’s why I’m asking you: when giving up on Windows phones, should I go for Android or join Apple’s closed ecosystem and get an iPhone? Let me know what you think, including the device you'd recommend switching to, in the comment box below.

P.S.: Just to clarify, I’m not abandoning Windows phones completely, I’m just seeking a replacement for my daily driver. I’ll still keep my army of Windows phones around and install every single update as soon as it’s released, hoping for something truly exciting that could bring be back.
