Arpinux, the developer of HandyLinux, has informed Softpedia about the immediate availability for download of HandyLinux 2.5, a new maintenance update in the 2.x stable series of the Debian-based computer operating system.

HandyLinux 2.5 arrived on June 11, 2016, exactly two months after the release of the previous maintenance version, HandyLinux 2.4, based on the recently announced Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie" operating system.

Every HandyLinux 2.x update is being rebased on the new point release of Debian GNU/Linux 8, the Jessie series, offering users new installation mediums that include the latest security patches and software updates released upstream.

Besides being rebased on Debian GNU/Linux 8.5, HandyLinux 2.5 comes with various updated applications, such as the latest Mozilla Firefox 47.0 web browser, and dozens of other improvements, like a custom image uploading component to Thunar.

The HandySoft package manager has been updated to fix some annoying issues, there's now an Xfwm4 theme (window borders) which you can see in the attached screenshot, a DNS issue has been patched, and the French documentation updated.

HandyLinux 3 development starts now, based on Debian 9

HandyLinux 2.5 is not the last update in the series, as the developer promises to add many other small improvements and fix bugs in the coming months, but it looks like he's started work on the next major release of the distribution, HandyLinux 3.

HandyLinux 3 will be based on the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system, which is currently in heavy development under the Debian Testing umbrella, and it promises lots of exciting new features.

"We start to prepare the future HandyLinux 3 (which will be based on Debian 9) now! And given that we keep you in the elbow, I think this future release will break three legs to a duck (no mercy)," says the developer in the release announcement.

Until we are able to get our hands on the first snapshot of HandyLinux 3, there's the HandyLinux 2.5 release to keep us entertained, whose Live ISO images you can download right now via our website.

The ISO images are available for both 64-bit and 32-bit computers. Existing users don't need to download anything, though, just make sure their HandyLinux installation is up to date.
