The development team at 343 Industries is making the Warzone mode one of the central elements of the multiplayer experience for Halo 5: Guardians and they are talking up the new Power Core feature as a way to make sure that gamers who are losing a match always have a chance to make a surprising comeback.

Lawrence Metten, the senior multiplayer designer, explains on the Halo Waypoint blog that the studio aims to make sure that all games remain engaging regardless of the core score.

He adds, "We wanted to create a system that would facilitate epic match climaxes with all 24 players involved and the entire sandbox of Halo toys in play. The destructible Power Core brings everyone in the match together, whether players are attacking or defending, to create exciting down-to-the-wire match finales."

The article offers more information on the initial ideas that powered the creation of the Power Core for Halo 5: Guardians Warzone and the way the concept evolved to become a central element of the mode.

Adrian Bedoya, the multiplayer level designer, says that at first the idea was to use three cores, with each vulnerable to one type of attack, but the company settled on a simpler approach for the final version.

Halo 5: Guardians Warzone initially did not feature scores

343 Industries first wanted to make Power Core destruction the only way to win a match, with the points awarded for kills only offered as a way to allow players to get access to REQ cards.

The developers tweaked the design for the final version to make sure that gamers can win by getting more points for their team.

Capture points to disable protections for the central Power Core are also now featured in Warzone to add a bigger tactical element and to prevent matches from ending too quickly.

343 Industries aims to make Halo 5: Guardians a complete shooter, offering a classic campaign, the options to tackle it cooperatively with friends, and delivering significant tweaks to the traditional formula of the series' multiplayer.

The team is also promising more emotion for the narrative and a lower entry barrier for those new to the franchise and its associated mechanics and universe.

Halo 5: Guardians will be out on the Xbox One on October 27.
