The experience is based around an elimination mechanic

The development team at 343 Industries working on Halo 5: Guardians might have just delivered a new live-action commercial for the video game, but they know that the long-term future of the title depends on its multiplayer, of which the new Breakout mode for the Arena experience will be an important part.

According to a new site update, work on it began as far back as 2010 and Kevin Franklin, the design director working on it, says his team aims to deliver a fast paced elimination mode with some unique twists.

Breakout in Halo 5: Guardians will be based around rounds, with victory going to the first team that wins five of them.

Both taking out all the members of the opposing team and pushing a flag to the base are ways to end a round, with 343 Industries aiming to offer a mode that allows teams to deliver comebacks even when the situation looks grim.

Breakout features a running start, which is unusual for the multiplayer of a first person shooter, but it also offers early hints about its nature.

Franklin adds, "My biggest hope for the Breakout is that it’s a mode that will evolve with Halo, and incorporate great ideas from the community. Pro Team has done a great job of building several of the launch maps for Breakout, and we’re really excited to see what the community can come up with as well."

Halo 5: Guardians aims for diversity

Quinn Delhoyo, a multiplayer designer, adds that 343 Industries has spent a lot of time tweaking the rules and the maps in order to make the experience exciting and balanced, with a focus on risk versus rewards, the creation of solid front lines and emphasizing positioning of each member of the team.

The studio promises that it will deliver more details about the mode and some hints for teams who want to try it out in the coming weeks.

Halo 5: Guardians is set to arrive on October 27 and will be offered only on the Xbox One.

343 Industries is delivering a complex single-player campaign, which focuses on the dual perspectives of Agent Locke and Master Chief and allows players to play cooperatively in groups of up to four.

The multiplayer features the more competitive oriented Arena, but also Warzone, an all new mode that combines PvP and PvE action.
