Accidents do happen in the software world too, and some Windows 7 and 8.1 users know this very well because their computers got upgraded to Windows 10 all of a sudden due to what Microsoft called “a mistake.”

But if you’re still on Windows 7 or 8.1 and don’t want to install Windows 10 anytime soon, there are several methods to prevent your computer from getting the upgrade to the new OS, either manually or “accidentally.”

An alternative to GWX Control Panel, the intuitively-called GWX Stopper is now at version 2.0 and can help you block the Get Windows 10 app that’s responsible for downloading the installer of the new OS.

The first time we wrote about GWX Stopper was in early September when quite a lot of people were looking for ways to block the Get Windows 10 app, but in the meantime, Microsoft made several changes to this program, so updates were needed to remain effective.

So GWX Stopper 2.0 is here to help block the upgrade to Windows 10 despite the recent changes that Microsoft has implemented into its app, thus making it easier for Windows 7 and 8.1 users who just want to stick to their current OS to simply do that.

It’ll soon get worse

But the struggle not to get Windows 10 will actually begin in early 2016 when Microsoft makes the upgrade a recommended install, so all these apps need further updates to cope with this change.

This strategy is part of Microsoft’s effort to push Windows 10 to users eligible for the free upgrade. The offer will end on July 29, 2016, so the last six months or so could witness the introduction of new notifications that might make it even harder for users not to upgrade.

In the meantime, this new app can really come in handy to a number of users, so go download GWX Stopper to see what it’s up to.
