Not at all surprisingly, it sounds positively awful

A few weeks back, a video of an alleged tortilla vinyl playing “The Mexican Hat Dance” made it online and the whole world went crazy over it. The one thing that was terribly wrong with the video and that disappointed hundreds of thousands of tortillas and music fans: it was all just a joke.

Even so, it looks like this innocent scam wasn't a complete waste of time after all, seeing as it inspired Redditor UpgradeTech to get to work and try to make an actual tortilla record.

“A while ago there was a satirical video featuring a tortilla jammed on top of a record player spindle,” the inventor writes in an Instructables post detailing his project.

"The video went viral and I wanted to see if I could actually make a tortilla record work without merely piping in some music in the background,” UpgradeTech goes on to explain.

Lo and behold, his plan succeeded

The man behind what might be the world's first ever tortilla record says that, to get it right and make sure his bizarre creation would actually be playable, he used an uncooked flour tortilla.

Cooked tortillas were dismissed on account of having a rather annoying tendency to shred and corn tortillas were too cast aside for being too lumpy to become playable records.

Having selected the perfect tortilla and the music he wanted to record on it, UpgradeTech used a laser cutter to make his playable dough. Things worked out so well he ended up creating not just one but several records.

Admittedly, the tortilla records all sound rather awful, and the words accompanying the tunes are difficult to discern. Check out the videos below to see (better said, hear) for yourself.

Note: the last video shows the fake tortilla record that inspired UpgradeTech.

Then again, it's not like UpgradeTech expected to record symphonies. “This was a proof of concept to see if I could make an actual working tortilla record,” he says.
