Writer and director James Gunn confirms it on Twitter

“Guardians of the Galaxy” was the underdog in the Marvel universe when it came out last year, but it became a massive hit despite featuring a bunch of superheroes only loyal comic book fans had heard of. A sequel is now underway.

It was confirmed shortly after the success of the first film was confirmed, as tradition calls, these days at least. An official title wasn’t made public until the other day, when Marvel boss Kevin Feige let it slip in an interview that it would be “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2.”

Backed into a corner by his own boss, James Gunn, who wrote and directed the first one and is set to reprise all responsibilities on the sequel, confirmed it on Twitter.

He also had to make sure fans understood that he wasn’t being sarcastic: “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” was really the name of the film that would hit theaters in May 2017.

In a post on his Facebook, Gunn says that fans had actually guessed the title some days before, but he wasn’t able to say anything because he had been sworn secrecy by Marvel. They guessed it from a photo of the script he had posted online and by making the connection to the mixtape Star Lord listened to in the first film.

Knowing that Gunn had said that the sequel would explore some characters introduced in the original more, and that it would help fans “learn a lot about fathers,” they concluded that “Volume 2” was a logical choice.

Production on “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” is set to begin in early 2016.
