The GTK+ development team just released a few moments ago a new stable and development release of the widely-used GTK+ open-source toolkit for GNOME and GNOME-based desktop environments and related apps.

GTK+ 3.22.8 is now the most stable and advanced build of the toolkit, and will soon be available for most GNU/Linux distributions that use it. While it's only a small maintenance update, it adds a few interesting improvements for Ubuntu's Mir display server, such as window focus tracking, window properties, and modal hint support.

Additionally, GTK+ 3.22.8 makes it possible to connect to Mir's content-hub and use it for copy and paste functions. The next-generation Wayland display server also received a little bit of attention in this new stable release, as the development team managed to implement a change that would avoid overlapping between Alt and Meta keys.

It also addresses several bugs that have been reported by users lately, such as GNOME Software showing the wrong name, icon, and menu on the Dash, an issue that made drop-down menus in GTK+ apps to not be visible when working via RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) from a Windows system, and a problem with scrollbars not updating.

GTK+ 4 to implement more clipping for the Vulkan renderer

On the other hand, it looks like the road to the massive GTK+ 4 continues, and snapshot 3.89.4 is also available today for public testing, implementing more clipping for the Vulkan renderer, making specifying of px unit for pixels a requirement, and adds some important API changes, such as the fact that style properties are no longer supported.

These new API changes also make widgets visible by default, except for toplevels, and it looks like command-line arguments are no longer supported by gtk_init and other init functions. A couple of Wayland improvements have also been added in GTK+ 3.89.4, along with a fix for an issue that would make the menu to be drawn on top of the menubar on Fedora Linux.

These new GTK+ builds also update the Finnish, German, Icelandic, Galician, Spanish, Kazakh, Polish, Slovak, and Simplified Chinese language translations. You can download both GTK+ 3.22.8 and GTK+ 3.89.4 releases from our website, but you should monitor your distro's stable channels for the new stable version and update as soon as possible.
