Paolo Bacchilega, the developer of the gThumb open-source and free image viewer and browser application designed specifically for the GNOME desktop environment, kicked off the development of the next major version, gThumb 3.6.

A first snapshot is now available for download, gThumb 3.5.1, and ships with numerous new features and improvements. For example, there's now double-click activation support, a brand-new zoom popover that includes a bunch of zoom commands, as well as a zoom slider, and a color picker.

Moreover, gThumb 3.6 will ship with a new option that lets users open image files directly in the full-screen mode. The application also promises a revamp of the user interface by using a headerbar for all dialogs, but only where the desktop environment supports it (e.g. GNOME).

A new "Keyboard Shortcuts" entry was added to the App Menu so you can easily access and configure the keyboard shortcuts, and it looks like the tag filter feature is now capable of supporting regular expressions for filtering images. gThumb 3.6 will also allow users to sort catalogs by name and date.

Users ca now pause a GIF and view the next frame

The list of new features continues with the ability to also open any newly created folder from within the app, the ability to pause a GIF image and view the next frame, support for hiding the image's frame in full-screen, support for Fuji RAF raw images, and a new keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+O) for opening the location dialog.

Speed optimizations and performance improvements were added to the find duplicate functionality, it's now possible to enter full screen directly from the viewer mode thanks to a new button added to the headerbar, and it looks like the photo importer preferences have been moved to the extension section.

Of course, there are numerous other bug fixes implemented in the gThumb 3.5.1 development snapshot, which you can download right now from our website if you want to get an early taste of what's coming to the major gThumb 3.6 release later this month as part of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment.
