gThumb, the open-source image viewer for the GNOME desktop environment, has been updated this week to version 3.6, a new stable branch that introduces numerous new features and improvements.

gThumb 3.6 comes with better support for the next-generation Wayland display server as the built-in video player, color profiles, and application icon received Wayland support. The video player component received a "Loop" button to allow you to loop videos, and there's now support for HiDPI displays.

The app also ships with a color picker, a new option to open files in full-screen, a zoom popover that offers different zoom commands and a zoom slider, support for double-click activation, faster image loading, aspect ratio filtering, and the ability to display the description of the color profile in the property view.

On top of that, the usability of the Tags dialog has been improved with support for keyboard navigation, simpler tag addition by adding a comma to the end of each tag entry, and the ability to no longer select the entry content after opening the dialog. Also, all dialogs can now use the headerbar if it's supported by the host OS.

Fujifilm's RAF raw files are now recognized

Another cool new feature of the gThumb 3.6 release is support for Fujifilm's RAF raw files by implementing the image/x-fuji-raf mime type. On the other hand, the Photobucket uploader has been removed, along with the PicasaWeb album creartion functionality and the Facebook photo importer.

The "Keyboard Shortcuts" entry is now available in the App Menu, the Photo Importer preferences are now available in the extension section, it's now possible to filter tags using regular expressions, as well as to sort catalogs by name and date. Speed optimizations were also implemented for the find duplicates function.

Other than that, gThumb now lets you pause GIF animations and view the next frame, it features a control-o accelerator for opening the location dialog, allows generic accelerators for scripts, automatically opens newly created folders, and shows a "Fullscreen" button on the headerbar in viewer mode.

Of course, big memory leaks were plugged from this major update, along with minor ones, and several other bugs have been fixed. We should also mention the fact that the application's image frame is now hidden by default when in full-screen mode. gThumb 3.6 is available for download right now from our website and it's coming soon to your favorite GNU/Linux distribution.
