Still selling like hot cakes five years after launch

Grand Theft Auto V is a five-year-old game that’s still in the charts for the number of copies sold, which is a testament to just how good this game really is.

When Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto V all the way back in 2013, they couldn’t have imagined the success. Sure, it’s a GTA game, and it’s always going to sell, but we’re now in 2018, and it’s being sold like it was just released.

What’s even more interesting is that Rockstar turned their game into microtransaction extravaganza, but the community didn’t seem to care about that really. On the other hand, the company also allowed people to mod the hell out of the game, and that bolstered the sale tremendously, especially on the PC.

Still selling like hotcakes

According to a report on Eurogamer, the number of copies sold in the UK is over 1 million for 2017 (1,080,022 to be more precise). The reason why this number only applies to the UK is that it’s one of the few video game markets that allows for a reasonable statistic.

It turns out that, by February 2018, Rockstar managed to sell over 90 million copies of the game, for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PS4. All of these sales are most likely powered by the online component, which is still in the top multiplayer games today.

Even if GTA V is riddled with microtransactions, the community doesn’t seem to care about this. And, we have to stop and think about the fact that GTA V is actually the last game developed by this company. The next one on the list is Red Dead Redemption 2, but it’s still a long way out.

It remains to be seen if Rockstar decides to get a little greedy with their new titles, given the success of the previous titles, but we can only hope that they’ll keep away from EA’s path.
