The GStreamer 1.12 major release is coming next month, but Collabora's Olivier Crête is sharing with us today some of the most important new features implemented so far by various developers.

Collabora made several contributions to the widely-used open-source and cross-platform multimedia framework, and now that many of you already managed to get an early taste of the new features coming with the GStreamer 1.12 release during the RC (Release Candidate) testing phase, let's take a look at the upcoming changes.

The biggest new feature of GStreamer 1.12 appears to be support for Intel's Media SDK (Software Development Kit), which was made open source by the famous company, allowing anyone to contribute to its code and improve the cross-platform API (Application Programming Interface).

Intel Media SDK support in GStreamer 1.12 will be made available through a new msdk plugin, which provides access to the accelerated video encoder and decoder functions of Intel graphics hardware on both GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

CineForm support comes to Gstreamer thanks to GoPro's developer

Another interesting feature coming to the GStreamer 1.12 multimedia framework is support for CineForm, a proprietary video codec used by GoPro cameras to encode video content with 4K and higher resolutions. The CineForm support will be available in GStreamer thanks to the contributions made by GoPro's developers.

"In terms of contributors, while the full list will be available with the 1.12 release notes, one highlight worth mentioning is the first ever contribution by GoPro developers, which will bring CineForm support to Gstreamer," said Olivier Crête, Multimedia Domain Lead at Collabora.

If you want to test these new features, you can download the GStreamer 1.12 Release Candidate (RC) right now from our website, and you should also take a look at the blog article published by Collabora's Olivier Crête to see what else will arrive in this major release, which should hit the streets in early May.
