14 DAY TRIAL // Great news for fans of the Nexus and Pixel lineups, as Google will continue to launch new devices that offer pure Android experiences. Although it's a bit early to talk about a Pixel successor, it's never too late the talk about what Google has learned from the launch of the current models.
The folks over at AndroidPit have sat down with ex-Motorola CEO Rick Osterloh, now head of Google's hardware department, to learn about the company's plans in regard to the next Pixel handset.
According to Osterloh, Google plans to follow the same pattern it did in the previous years when it announced its new Nexus and Pixel devices in fall: “There is an annual rhythm in the industry. So, you can count on us to follow it.”
And for those who wonder whether or not a Pixel 2 will be released this year, Osterloh said that we “can count on a successor this year, even if you don't hear a date from me now.” Basically, Google will continue to do what it has done until now, so we should expect at least one new smartphone at some point in October.
No cheap Pixel smartphone coming from Google
One other thing that Google's head of hardware confirmed is that the company's upcoming Pixel 2 will remain in the premium segment, which means it will pack the latest technology and hardware available on the market at a high price: “Pixel stays premium.”
What's even more interesting is that Google does not plan to launch a cheaper Pixel smartphone. Osterloh was pretty clear when asked about the price range of the Pixel 2 and said that Google wants to leave the lower price segments to other manufacturers, so there won't be a budget-friendly Pixel phone.
Hopefully, the next Pixel phone Google launches won't be so hard to find as the current phones that ship to customers weeks after they've been ordered, when they're not out of stock.
