Some users may choose to run legacy versions of various applications on their smartphones or tablets for one reason or another, but Google has recently announced that legacy versions of some G Suite apps will shut down on April 3, 2017.

Specifically, legacy versions of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides for both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets will no longer be available. Those who use such versions are expected to update their applications to the latest version in the Play store or App Store. Another option is to give up G Suite completely.

Google Drive for Android prior to version 2.4.311 will shut down on April 3, together with Docs, Sheet and Slides for the same mobile OS prior to versions 1.6.292. On iOS, Drive app running a version earlier than 4.16 will be retired, together with Docs prior to version 1.2016.12204, Sheets prior to version 1.2016.12208, and Slides prior to version 1.2016.12203.

Some users will be forced to update their apps after March 1

Google has announced that users of legacy versions will start seeing notifications for upgrading starting this month. In addition, some users running very old versions on the phones will be forced to upgrade when they receive the notification after March 1. Google didn’t mention which are these very old versions.

The report also says that corresponding web and desktop applications won’t be affected by the change and Google urges its users to download and install the latest version of Docs, Drive, Sheets and Slides apps.

There are many advantages to running the latest version of G Suite apps, including optimized performance and new features. For example, one of the features that Google introduced last year to apps in the G Suite is the ability to retrieve trashed files that users might have deleted accidentally or intentionally. The feature is available in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
