Just a few hours ago, Google completed its event in San Francisco, during which the tech giant unveiled two smartphones, Pixel and Pixel XL. Needless to say, the two phones come with the latest specs and Google claims the camera on the Pixel phones is the best ever used on a smartphone.

That’s a rather bold claim to make and the company provided some data to support its statement. Apparently, Google engineers spent one year working on the smartphone camera, which received the highest score ever from DxOMark, a trusted industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings.

Indeed, the cameras on Pixel phones received a score of 89, which is higher than the 86 score recorded by Apple’s iPhone 7. Moreover, the Pixel phones seem to have better cameras than the Google Nexus 6P, Apple iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, and Google Nexus 6. HTC 10, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Sony Xperia X Performance managed to record a score of 88.

Pixel phones come with 12.3MP rear cameras

DxOMark Mobile claims that Google’s Pixel phones come with a high level of detail and relatively low levels of noise for every tested lighting condition. The camera manages to provide accurate exposures with good contrast and white balance.

It also works well with autofocus, but it does have some inconsistencies when it comes to repeated autofocus. Rear cameras on the Pixel phones come with 12.3MP and f/2.0 aperture, together with the ability to record 4k videos at 30fps or 1080p videos at 120fps.

The Pixel phones managed to do quite well when it came to outdoor photos, as well as images taken in low-light conditions and indoor scenes. Flash capability on the two smartphones performed quite well, too, being stable from frame to frame and allowing for details to be rendered in flash images.

However, there are some cons to the rear cameras. Video recording might result in slight motion blur on walking scenes in low-light conditions and slight chromatic noise or color shading. Nevertheless, DxOMark claims that it’s the best smartphone camera that it has ever tested.
