Google has silently pushed a new feature to Nexus and Pixel devices that is called Instant Tethering. It's a slightly more advanced implementation of the standard tethering functionality, which is supposed to make the process of setting up connectivity using this feature much easier.

The new Instant Tethering feature has been implemented as part of Google Play Services 10.2, so if you own a Nexus or Pixel device and haven't yet updated to this version, then you won't be able to benefit from it.

It's also worth noting that some Nexus and Pixel devices that have already been updated to Google Play Services 10.2 don't have the new Instant Tethering feature enabled, but you can check for it by heading to the settings and Google menu.

According to AndroidPolice, with the new feature, Nexus and Pixel devices will automatically set up a new tethering connection without having to make any special settings.

It looks like Instant Tethering can connect devices that are associated with a Google account, thus making it easier to stay online when the connection drops. Basically, whenever the connection drops, the phone will ask you whether you want to tether to another device associated with your Google account or not.

If your answer is “yes,” then you won't need to make any additional changes, but keep in mind that the feature uses Bluetooth to negotiate the connection, so make sure it's enabled. Instant Tethering also allows users to see the battery level of their other device.

Google hasn't yet announced anything related to Instant Tethering, but it looks like the new feature is being pushed to Nexus and Pixel devices that are powered by Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system.

Moreover, the Nexus 9 and Pixel C are supported as clients only, which means these devices can connect to compatible phones. The new feature also allows two phones to connect to each other if one of them loses its connection.
