Google says Chrome battery life is substantially improved

Microsoft has recently posted benchmarks to show that its new Edge browser integrated into Windows 10 offers significantly better battery life as compared to its competitors, including here Opera, Firefox, and Google Chrome.

And while Opera has already responded with its own benchmarks, Google and Mozilla preferred to remain tight-lipped and let Microsoft go on with its claims. Until today, that is.

Google, who recently rolled out the new Chrome 53 with Material Design and other improvements, has posted a new video to show that this updated version of its browser comes with significant battery life tweaks over the version 46 launched one year ago.

Better than Chrome 46

The search giant performed the tests on Surface Book, Microsoft’s laptop that was launched in October 2015 and that is expected to receive an upgrade as soon as this year. Microsoft previously used Surface devices for its own benchmarks too, so it’s not surprising to see Google turning to the same device series in order to highlight the battery capabilities of its new browser.

“People use their browsers for more than just video. That’s why we’ve been improving battery life across the board, tracking progress using power measurement tools. As one example, Chrome for Mac now uses 33 percent less power for everything from videos and images to simple page scrolling. Whether you’re planning a vacation or getting work done, you now get more browsing time from a single battery charge,” Google explains.

What’s worth mentioning, however, is that Google hasn’t performed benchmarks against other browsers, such as Microsoft’s own Edge, and we all know what Microsoft’s fanboys are going to say. But for the moment, choosing the best power-efficient browser still comes down to the most popular names on the market, which include Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Mozilla Firefox.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft wants to conduct a new series of benchmarks to put Edge against the latest version of Chrome, but no matter its decision, competition in this regard is getting fiercer, and the ones to benefit from it are customers.
