Google on Monday pushed the Chrome 64 web browser to the Beta channel for its Android mobile operating system, allowing users to get an early taste of the new features the company implemented in the upcoming release.

With Chrome 64, Google promises a more powerful pop-up blocker as more and more users submit feedback reports about the web browser blocking unwanted content like links to third-party websites masked as play buttons or other elements, as well as transparent overlays capturing all site clicks and then opening new tabs or windows.

"In this release, Chrome's pop-up blocker now prevents sites with these types of abusive experiences from opening new tabs or windows," said Google. "Site owners can use the Abusive Experiences Report in Google Search Console to see if any of these abusive experiences have been found on their site and improve their user experience."

Introducing Resize Observer API and import.meta property

For developers, Google implemented a Resize Observer API in Chrome 64 that promises to offer granular control for web applications to recognize changes to sizes of elements on a web page. This API comes as a drop-in replacement for the window.onresize property or CSS media queries, which were for building components that adapt content to different viewport sizes.

In addition, Chrome 64 promises support for the import.meta property within modules that expose the module URL via import.meta.url, which might come in handy to developers that create JavaScript modules and want access to host-specific metadata about the current module. Of course, the Blink engine received a few improvements as well.

Chrome 64 beta is now rolling out to Android users via Google Play Store. You can install or update to this version right now if you want an early taste of the new features, but we recommend staying on the stable channel for a bug-free experience. Chrome 64 beta is also available for download on GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
