The new Pixel Launcher should arrive later this year

Google is working on new updates and features to add to its Pixel Launcher, and the tech giant previewed the new tools during the Google I/O keynote. Two videos reveal a number of enhancements that users should expect from the new Pixel Launcher version.

Pixel Launcher will soon get a search bar right in the homescreen, but located at the bottom of the display, thus providing easy reach. The search bar appears to always be visible, making it quite convenient and easy to use.

In addition, Google will bring expanded search functionality in the redesigned Pixel Launcher. The current version allows users to search for apps installed on their phones, but the new tool will even let them search for applications directly in the Play store. It seems that the new version will have a more enhanced functionality than just support for Android Instant Apps.

Still, Android Instant Apps will be available in the upcoming Android O, and they will work with the Pixel Launcher. Google did recently release the Android Instant Apps SDK to all developers, which means that users will be able to check out more and more applications without having to actually install them on their phones.

The new Pixel Launcher could arrive with Android O

The second Developer Preview of Android O also revealed some new features coming to the Pixel Launcher, according to a report. Pixel Launcher will soon allow users to pick from multiple icon shapes and choose from square, rounded corner rectangle, squircle or cylinder options. These adaptive icons will make it easier for users to customize their experience.

At this point, it’s unclear when the new version will go live, it’s possible that it will be provided only when the stable Android O version launches. Google did say that Android O could arrive in late summer, much sooner than the previous Android Nougat version. Still, the new Pixel Launcher could also arrive with the next Pixel 2 smartphones, set to be announced this fall, although there’s also the chance that it could be pushed out before that.
