Google is tipped to be revisiting an old idea

Google is currently going through some heavy restructuring, with the company splitting all its smaller ventures into separate businesses and organizing them under an umbrella company called Alphabet. And today, we also find out that Google is working to launch a new affiliate program for Google Play, with separate libraries for Movies & Music being provided.

The program is said to be quite similar to Apple’s own digital content stores. What’s more, the venture is apparently powered by Performance Horizon Group, the same company which back in 2013 offered its support to Apple.

According to sources talking to 9to5google, who requested to be anonymous, Google is planning this new program in order to allow its partners to link to Google music, movies (for starters) and apps. When an item like this is purchased, the partner will receive a small fee.

Google will soon offer a service similar to Apple's iTunes

For the time being, there aren’t a whole lot of details known about the new initiative and Google is yet to confirm or deny the rumors, but they seem to be pretty legit. Still, the program is in its very early stages of development and a lot might change until it becomes official.

You might remember this is not the first time Google is trying its hand at developing such a program. Back when the Android Market was a thing, Google tried setting up the Affiliate Network, which was an in-house effort designed to function along the same lines. But when the Android Market got transformed into the Google Play Store, the network got axed.

It appears that Google believes it is time to resurrect the program. The affiliate initiative will provide content creators with novel ways for monetization, by allowing them to link to product sales pages and earn commissions every time someone buys a product using a unique link.

What do you think about Google’s intention of setting up an Affiliate program?
