The new phone from Google doesn't even need two cameras

Google Pixel 2 was reviewed by DxOMark, and it looks like the mobile world has a new leader, at least regarding camera quality.

When Google launches a new device, it usually becomes the best on the market, and the camera is the first one to be noticed. The guys from DxOMark had the phone before launch, and the review was in place just in time for the official announcement.

From the looks of it, with the exception of the Zoom and Bokeh categories, the new Google Pixel 2 now features the best camera in the world, and that’s true for both the regular and XL versions of the device.

What makes it the best?

Google Pixel 2 comes in first place when tested for bright light, low luminosity environments, exposure, contrast, color balance, details, and noise. The only exceptions are the zoom and Bokeh functions, but they are by no means bad, they just score a little bit less than the direct competition, iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

These lowest scores are caused by a simple issue. Google Pixel 2 comes with a single camera and not two like the others. This means that all the effects it needs, such as portrait mode and Bokeh, for example, are done with the help of software, which is not as good. Still, it’s doing a fantastic job given the circumstances.

Google Pixel 2 is not a perfect phone, but as it stands right now it’s as good as it gets. If you want the best camera, a beautiful phone, and the best security on the market, you’ll have to get one of these.

What’s more interesting is that it’s unlikely that the Google Pixel 2 will get serious competition any time soon, so it’s going to take us well into 2018. Also, it shows that when it comes to software optimization, both Apple and Samsung are lagging behind.
