Nexus devices could store any number of videos and photos

Google launched Photos one year ago, the application is designed for freeing up space on smartphones and tablets. To celebrate the anniversary of one year, the team from Google Photos compiled a list of tips and tricks that users will surely enjoy. Google is also preparing to launch a new version which will likely allow Nexus devices to get free unlimited storage.

Google announced that over the span of one year, it reached 200 million users per month and delivered more than 1.6 billion animations, collages and movies. It seems that users have stored 13.7 petabytes of data in the servic and Google calculated that it would take 424 years to swipe through all of those images.

Google also mentioned that it applied 2 trillion labels to images in the Google Photos service and 24 billion of those have been for selfies.

The team from Google Photos created a list of tips and tricks for using the service on Android and iOS smartphones, as well as on the web.

Users can narrow down their searches and find images with two tagged people or even places. They can also enter their favorite emoji into the search bar to find corresponding images or see which folders are being backed up, by tapping on the device folders from the top of the albums page on Android.

Another tip is that users can create a shared album of their family and every time someone adds a new photo, they will get a notification.

Free unlimited storage coming to Nexus devices in version 1.21

According to Android Police, Google is also preparing to launch the upcoming version of Google Photos. Version 1.21 will reportedly provide Nexus devices with free unlimited original quality backups, sorting options and exposure or contrast controls.

The new version isn’t available yet, but the APK teardown shows that Nexus devices could get free unlimited photo and video storage at original quality, including 4K video. At the moment, this option supports images up to 16MP and videos up to 1080p.

There’s no word on when the new version will be officially available, but until then users can get the current 1.20 version of Google Photos for Android and iOS, or use the web service.
